Mouth ulcers can get utterly painful. A range of things can cause them, like infection, hormonal imbalance, excess heat in the body, stomach ailments, and even stress. Mouth ulcers are generally harmless, although certain types could indicate cancer. Harmless ones can be healed easily with natural ingredients you can find right on your kitchen shelf! Here are some remedies used for treatment of mouth ulcers in Ayurveda you could try.
Treatment of Mouth Ulcers in Ayurveda
1. Honey
First on our list is this antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-loaded, moisturising, and delicious Ayurvedic medicine for mouth ulcers. Honey can help speed up the healing process, and it’s super simple to use as well. Just apply raw honey to the ulcer. Remember to wash your hands well before and after so as to not worsen the infection. Adding a wee bit of turmeric to it can boost its medicinal effects even further.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda can be quite a helpful remedy since it reduces inflammation, creates a healthy pH level in the mouth, relieves pain, as well as disinfects the area. This ingredient is especially for those whose ulcers have resulted from high acidity. Add a bit of water to 1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate. Mix them to form a paste. With a clean hand, apply it onto your mouth ulcer. Then, rinse it off by gargling with salt water.
3. Coconut
Coconut is an excellent Ayurvedic ingredient for health as well as beauty. It’s one of the easiest and most effective natural remedies for mouth ulcers too, since it tackles inflammation well and reduces pain. Take some virgin coconut oil and apply it on the ulcer. If you dislike the taste of the oil in your mouth, you can also rub coconut milk onto the ulcer. This is quite soothing for the affected skin. Both methods work well.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is often used for treatment of mouth ulcers in Ayurveda, thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, this herb soothes the skin and reduces acidity in the body. You can apply fresh and pure Aloe gel onto the ulcer. Or if acidity is the cause of your mouth ulcer, drinking Aloe Vera juice can be an effective home remedy to reduce the aggravated Pitta in your body and heal the ulcer from the root.
5. Salt Water
Next up is salt water, perhaps the most easily accessible ingredient for mouth ulcer treatment at home. Now let me warn you, this one can hurt. But salt is excellent at killing bacteria on the ulcer, thereby speeding up the healing process significantly. Warm up a cup of water and add 2 teaspoons of salt to it. Stir well for a minute. Take a sip, move it from cheek to cheek and then spit it out. Repeat the round a few times. Do this salt water swish 3-4 times a day.
A Few More Things…
It’s important to watch your diet when you’ve got mouth ulcers. Stick to non-spicy and lukewarm food. Avoid anything that’s too acidic, crunchy, or otherwise irritating to your skin and stomach. And when drinking liquids, use a straw. Apart from this, use a soft bristled toothbrush to avoid aggravating the ulcer.
Under normal circumstances, mouth ulcers heal within 7 to 10 days. If yours hasn’t healed within that time, you might want to see your doctor.
