Seroma is the formation of a lump at the site of surgery or incision. However, some injuries result in seroma too. A seroma usually resolves on its own, but it does not mean that treatment is not necessary. An untreated seroma can get infected and lead to calcification as well. Calcification is the accumulation of calcium in the body tissue hardening the area. There are ways a person can conduct seroma treatment at home. Seroma drainage is easy when it is not contaminated. Another complication of a seroma is that it can transform into an abscess with pus. Therefore, get seroma treatment as soon as possible.
What Causes Seroma?
A seroma occurs after surgery because the blood vessels get damaged during the operation. The fluid from the vessels starts collecting in the body tissues forming a lump.
What Are The Seroma Symptoms?
Seroma treatment is essential if you observe the following symptoms:
- Swollen lump
- Tender or sore on touch
- Clear discharge
- Redness and warmth around the area
- Bloody discharge
- Fever and chills
- Confusion
- Varying blood pressure
- Rapid heartbeats
Seroma Treatment
1. Apply Heat On The Area.
Heat helps in the drainage of fluid in a seroma. Apply a warm compress for seroma treatment three times a day. Soak a cloth in a bowl of hot water. Squeeze out the excess water and keep it over the seroma. The compress should not be too hot. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Seroma treatment at home will take about six weeks.
2. Keep The Area Elevated.
A lot of times doctors ask the patients to elevate the area of seroma. Height promotes fluid drainage. Consult the doctors about the position best for seroma treatment at home. Take as much as rest possible to recover quickly. Movements at the initial stage of surgery can cause troubles in healing.
3. Clean The Seroma.
The most important part of seroma treatment is preventing it from infection. Keep the affected area clean and do not touch the area with dirty hands. If bacteria enter the skin, then it could complicate the condition.

4. Wear Compression Garments.
Wear compression clothes for seroma drainage prevention. Doctors commonly refer to such clothes depending upon the nature of the surgery. These garments put pressure on the area of surgery reducing swelling and fluid retention.
5. Handle Drainage Tubes With Care.
Some seroma drainage needs drainage tubes for treatment. Handle those tubes carefully and keep them hygienic. Empty them from time to time or as instructed by the surgeon. Do not obstruct the drainage pipes by folding or sleeping over them.
PS: The seroma symptoms usually go away within a few weeks since your body absorbs that fluid. However, if it’s painful and getting larger, consult your doctor as he/ she might just drain it. Apart from that, take care of it and avoid any triggers.
