Hemophilia, a blood disease that’s pretty uncommon is also amongst those deadly and genetic disorders. Basically, it’s the inability of your blood to clot. Smaller cuts don’t have significant impact, but deep wounds may result in prolonged and internal bleeding. Infusion of the clotting factors is one hemophilia treatment. However, Ayurveda can help reduce the tendency to bleed profusely and also lower the complications.
Hemophilia Symptoms
- Nasal disorders
- Joint pain or excessive swelling
- Blood in the urine
- Easy injuries
- Nose bleeding
- Continuous bleeding when injured
- Discoloration of the skin
How Is Hemophilia Inherited?
Any blood disorders that take place in the human body result from an imbalance of Pitta Dosha. However, hemophilia is a genetic dysfunction that’s inherited from the mother to her son in particular. But in certain cases, it can also be acquired through newer sources. The inheritance of a faulty gene does not make a female the carrier, but she simply passes on the disease.
Hemophilia Treatment
There’s no permanent or long-term hemophilia treatment as of now. However, certain lifestyle and dietary changes can calm the situation. And people critically suffering from the condition may have to undergo professional supervision for the required Ayurvedic treatment and medication.
1. Exercise
A majority of specialists recommend a daily fitness routine for the patients with hemophilia. Exercising helps you strengthen your muscles and hence prevent injuries. Resistance training will also help you decrease the risk of injuries.
2. Helpful Foods
Health experts suggest not to consume any Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E rich foods. They prevent clumping of your platelets and hence increase the bleeding time. However, a vitamin K rich diet can aid the clotting process. Favour foods like kale, spinach, broccoli, and cabbage – these are high in vitamin K. But before you resort to supplements or make major changes in your diet, always consult your doctor!
3. Be Herb Conscious
People with hemophilia are recommended to use herbs that strengthen your blood vessels and also make bleeding less severe. But, one must avoid the usage of turmeric, garlic, ginger, ginseng and white willow. However, bilva or the Japanese bitter orange (also known as golden apple) can help develop that resistance when taken on a long term basis.
4. Protect Your Wounds
In case of bruises, you may apply a cold compress and for minor cuts. Pressure bandages work well. These prevent any excessive blood loss and immediately provide you with a long-term relief. Plus, don’t resort to self-medication.
5. Lifestyle Changes
Avoid sports like hockey, cricket or football. Do not take medicines like Aspirin that can again cause excessive bleeding. Be updated with your hepatitis vaccination. And avoid pitta aggravation at all costs – minimize the intake of fermented foods, exposure to hot temperatures, alcohol and spicy foods.
