Wondered why any time you visit doctors due to ailments, they first check your eyes? The eye tells a lot about your health. Ayurveda tells us that eyes are the most important of all the five sense organs. Eyes, according to Ayurveda, are where the Pitta dosha is seated. Your eyes work tirelessly and continuously all of our waking hours – and don’t even get rest throughout the time we are asleep! Considering the importance of eyes in your life, we have put together some eye health tips that will help you take proper care of this precious pair of our body.
Eye Health Tips
1. Splash Water On Strained Eyes.
One of the simplest eye care tips is to splash your eyes with cool water every morning. In fact if you are constantly on the computer or looking at some screen for hours, splash your eyes every 2 to 3 hours. The water may be slightly warm if you like, but not cold. Doing this regularly refreshes your eyes and prevents damage from strain.
2. Soothe Tired Eyes With Rose Water.
Next on our list of eye care tips is a sweet smelling one. Soak cotton pads in pure and organic rose water and place them on your eyelids. Rosewater is cooling and soothing, and does wonders for those tired eyes. Moreover, it pacifies Pitta. You will even sleep better, but remember to take them off before you drift off.
3. Nourish Dry Eyes With Ayurvedic Oils.
Dry or irritated eyes are a result of lack of lubricants or tears. Tears act as a shield against dust and other irritants. If the eyes are not lubricated, they may cause burning, irritation or even blurry vision. A few drops of castor or coconut oil into your eyes relive you of the pain, as both are anti-inflammatory and moisturizing. You are sure to feel the difference if you follow this eye care tip regularly.
4. Cooler Feet = Cooler Eyes.
Legs are the chimneys of our body. It is through the legs that excessive heat goes out of our bodies. No wonder, washing of feet was considered so important in earlier times. Wash the soles of your feet thoroughly every time you get home. You will feel the heat leaving your body and a sense of coolness settling in. And a cool body means cool eyes too.
5. Take Vitamins For Eyesight.
One of the eye health tips for preventing many eye diseases is by maintaining proper vitamin intake. Vitamins A, B6, B9 B12, C, D and E as well as carotenoids are crucial for eye health. Ensure that your daily diet consists of foods like:
- Oranges
- Broccoli
- Carrot
- Pumpkin
- Sweet potato
- Spinach
- Organic milk
- Soybeans
- Almonds
- Chia seeds

6. Massage Your Eyes Regularly.
Massage is Ayurveda’s most highly recommended therapies for overall well-being. Gently massage your eyelids with oils like olive oil, lavender essential oil or rose oil. Cover them for a few minutes with your hands to restore moisture naturally. As these oils have anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties, they reduce inflammation and irritation.
7. Practise Yoga For Eye Health.
There are yogic eye exercises you can learn and practice. A simple one is to concentrate or meditate by looking at a candle or lamp flame. This strengthens the eyes and improves vision. Another is to rub and warm up your palms, and them cup them on your eyes, without touching the eyelids. This encourages smooth blood circulation and relaxes the eyes.
