Water on earth and in the human body is a major source of life. It’s essential to keep the body hydrated, to flush out harmful toxins, improve blood circulation and maintain an overall wellbeing. But are you actually gaining maximum benefits? By taking large gulps of water each time, we leave ourselves asking for more and feeling a lack. But, where are we going wrong? The practice of drinking water while standing is the issue! The speed at which we drink is one thing, but maintaining a good posture is entirely different.
Effects of Drinking Water While Standing
1. Arthritis
This might come to you as a greater shock but to stand and drink water causes arthritis. This practice disrupts the fluid balance in your body, deteriorating the health of your joints to eventually cause Arthritis. Maybe not earlier but at a later stage, you start witnessing the signs and symptoms. So, if you tend to drink water while standing, it’s wise to stop it right away.
2. Improper Kidney Functioning
Our kidneys work effectively to filter the water we drink. But, drinking water while standing doesn’t allow the water to properly flow. This causes impurities to remain in the kidney and bladder, which eventually creates severe damage.
3. Excessive Thirst
Drinking water while standing doesn’t satiate your thirst, despite having a sufficient amount. And none of the essential nutrients are properly distributed through your body. This makes you feel thirsty time and again. So, to extinguish the dryness, sit down comfortably and drink water sip by sip to let it stay in your liver and circulate the vitamins thereafter.
4. Heartburn
Why not drink water while standing? It severely splashes the lower half of your oesophagus to disturb the working of the sphincter, a joint between oesophagus and stomach. As a result, the acid starts flowing backwards to cause a burning sensation.
5. Poor Digestion
Why is it said not to drink water while standing? It causes indigestion. When you are comfortably seated, the nervous system and your muscles are much more relaxed. This helps in digesting the liquid much faster, whereas, if you do the other way, your digestive system weakens. When drinking water standing up, it rapidly gushes through the food pipe and splashes on the wall of your stomach to come as a shock. This has a long-term damaging effect.
What Is The Best Way To Drink Water?
Our on-the-go lifestyle has actually made us forget the essence of drinking water the right way. We drink packaged water and the one that’s refrigerated or ice cold. We drink along greasy edibles or simply stand in front of the refrigerator and just throw up all in. But, that’s where we are going wrong. Lukewarm water is ideal and smaller sips are better.
Wet your tongue before you swallow. Swish it in your mouth and take room temperature or lukewarm water. Sit somewhere calmly, in a pleasant environment, and attain optimum health sip by sip. Drinking water standing up and at a faster rate causes a lack of oxygen both in the food and windpipe which leads to lung and heart issues. Therefore, drink it slow and steady.
Wrapping Up…
The next time someone reminds you to have a seat while drinking water, tell yourself that yes, there is a proper way of drinking water and you simply cannot gulp it down. Drink as much as you want but make sure to quench your thirst steadily!
