We all know that there are negative alcohol effects on the body. But we often forget the sheer extent of the harm it can cause. A couple of drinks every once in a while won’t do you long-term harm. But drinking regularly is a sure-shot way to end up with some kind of health problem in the future. The Charaka Samhita, an important ancient scripture on Ayurveda, describes alcohol as poison when taken in the wrong way. In this post, we shed light on the dangerous alcohol effects on your body as well as mind.
Alcohol Effects On The Body: Is It Worth The Damage?
1. Alcohol Depletes Vigour.
‘Ojas’ is the pure energy left behind from food that has been well digested. It is responsible for strength, positivity, vitality, immunity, and good emotional health. Ayurvedic experts know very well that alcohol strips away our vitality by depleting ojas. And everyone who drinks knows how weak, irritable, and unfocused one feels after a night of drinking. That’s ojas depletion!
2. It Can Cause Cancer.
This is one of the worst long term effects of alcohol on the body. Plenty of studies confirm that alcohol can significantly increase your chances of developing cancer. And not just one, but many kinds – cancers of the mouth, breast, colon, liver, throat…the list goes on. Moreover, if you smoke along with drinking, the risk is higher.
3. Many Digestive Problems!
Proper digestion is at the heart of good health, since the nutrients absorbed in the process fuel the your entire body. Alcohol causes a host of problems in the digestive system. This includes stomach ulcers, pancreatitis, higher risk of stomach infections, lesser absorption of nutrients, diarrhoea, constipation, and gas.
4. Alcohol Damages The Liver.
Liver damage is among the serious long term effects of alcohol on the body. Your liver processes alcohol and is responsible for getting rid of toxins from the body. But excess alcohol can cause your liver to weaken, which affects its ability to perform its vital function. Not just that – alcohol consumption causes scarring in the liver, leading to serious damage and if not treated on time, even death.
5. Drinking Gives You Diabetes.
If you are diabetic, or if it runs in your family, you’re much better off without alcohol. Although drinking causes blood sugar spikes in the short term, long term usage actually leads to hypoglycemia. Both can be quite dangerous to people who have diabetes. Alcohol damages your liver as well as pancreas, which affects your body’s insulin regulation abilities.
6. Alcohol Harms Your Heart Too.
Next among the long term effects of alcohol on the body is heart problems. Alcohol can cause a variety of heart problems. They include high blood pressure, anaemia, cholesterol, and irregular heartbeat. If you drink too much, you end up at a higher risk of a stroke or heart attack.
7. It Weakens The Brain.
What are the effects of alcohol on the brain? Effects include memory loss, reduced coordination, impaired judgment, mood swings, and lower focus and concentration power. In fact, alcohol abuse can leave you with irreparable brain damage and changes in personality. The mental effects of alcohol consumption are rather serious and shouldn’t be ignored. It can damage your frontal lobe – the part of your brain responsible for emotional control, sexuality, and social behaviour.
