A hangover is one of the worst things to wake up with. At the cost of sounding preachy, the best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink – in Ayurveda, alcohol classifies as a tamasic food that weakens the body and leads to disease. But if you do choose do indulge in a bunch of drinks once in a while, there are ways to help the body recover faster. These 7 home remedies work as natural medicine for hangovers.
Natural Medicine For Hangovers – 7 Home Remedies
1. Light Nutritious Meals
Don’t skip breakfast when you have a hangover. However, stick to light yet nutritious foods that contain B vitamins. Fortified oatmeal, fresh fruit juices, dark leafy greens, and honey are great options. A glass of milk is considered a whole meal in Ayurveda, so if you can’t stomach solid food, drink some warm organic cow milk. For lunch, have khichdi. It’s nutritious, light, detoxifying, and brings your blood sugar levels back up.
2. Bananas
It’s a given that your potassium levels drop after a night of drinking. When you lose electrolytes, you feel fatigued, dull, and are prone to body aches. An easy way to deal with this is to simply replenish your potassium levels with food. Snack on bananas during the day. They will give you a quick energy boost.
3. Coconut Water
Coconut water is far better than energy drinks. It contains lots of nutrients you’ll need while you have a hangover – vitamin C, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium, to name a few. Moreover, it hydrates the body excellently (it’s 90% water) and helps flush away toxins. Also good for headaches. Here’s more about the health benefits of coconut water.
4. Water
Drinking plenty of water is absolutely vital during a hangover. That’s because drinking alcohol dehydrates you. So, drink water to rehydrate your body. Water also boosts the rate of detoxification through urine. Make sure you drink warm water. You can drink loads of warm soup, fruit juices, and herbal teas. Ginger tea is an excellent natural medicine for hangovers. They not only soothe the mind but also give your body some much-needed nourishment.
5. Exercise
Getting out of bed is probably one of the last things you want to do when hungover, but exercise can be a great medicine for hangovers. Simply because it makes you sweat, and your body can release plenty of toxins through sweating. Exercise also boosts “feel good” hormones in your body. Consider doing a few rounds of Surya Namaskar.
6. A Warm Bath
After a nice and sweaty work out session, hit the bathroom. Make yourself a warm bath with bath salts. Bath salts like Epsom salt and Himalayan salt increase blood circulation, soothe the mind excellently, and promote detoxification through the skin. You could also light up some lavender incense; nerve-calming fragrances can be a great hangover headache cure. Turning on some soothing music works wonders.
7. Sleep
Last up, get some sleep. Your body has been under stress and is working hard to return to normalcy. Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep will speed up the healing process. Have a light meal for dinner followed by a glass of warm chamomile tea. Go to bed between 9 pm to 10 pm.
