A majority of us would have faced a situation where we wanted to sneeze (with full force) but couldn’t! A professional meeting stopped us. We wanted to urinate but held it back because that favourite show was just too addictive. At times even wanted to cry but being strong is the ultimate teaching. Whereas, what we don’t understand is the importance of these natural urges and the significance of letting them out at the right time.
If you are in a habit of holding these back (sometimes or frequently) then you might be risking your overall well-being. According to Ayurveda, letting out your natural desires prevent the body from sustaining any internal diseases. You tend to overlook them but suppression only interferes with the body’s state of balance along with unbalancing your Vata.
So the following natural urges need your immediate attention as repressing them time and again only lead to problems that are absolutely unknown.
1. Sneeze
Why should you not stop your urge to sneeze? Because it may cause certain internal injuries that aren’t so extreme but you might just be an unlucky one! A sneeze wouldn’t affect your personality but its suppression may cause stiffness in the neck, occasional headache, weakening blood vessels in the brain, ruptured eardrums and/ or breakage of the blood vessel in the whites of the eye. Ensure not to be ignorant of the same as in the long run facial paralysis can also occur.
2. Cough
Even if it’s like a cough attack, do not hold onto it! Don’t let the suppression of such natural urges lead to the worsened situation. Practice deep breathing and keep sipping some water to pacify your cough and not completely smother the same. In case you are in a habit of suppressing the urge to cough, be ready to host respiratory afflictions like hiccups, asthma and/ or chest pain.
3. Cry
Let those tears roll down your eyes! Don’t try to brave out a situation and also don’t abide by the stereotypes of feelings being unnatural. Try and express your pain to actually stop it from coming over and again. Get it out to stop bothering you. Talk to a friend or get your dog’s shoulder and cry out loud else health problems like running nose, chronic headache, eye and heart diseases are just around the corner.
4. Sleep
You might be occasionally depriving yourself of sleep due to lifestyle intricacies or blame it all on overworking, but just get ready to face issues like excessive yawning, body pain, drowsiness, heaviness in the eyes and/ or diseases pertaining to your head. Gradually you tend to lose your confidence, become an insomniac and even suffer from digestive disorders.
5. Yawn
Yes, even an on-purpose yawn does good for you! The word itself makes you yawn but you tend to avoid the urge due to public presence or other reasons. But what you don’t understand is that yawning relieves your stress and brings in fresh oxygen. Suppressing such natural urges make you vulnerable to headaches, stiff neck muscles, dizziness and/ or shaking of your body.
6. Urinate
It can be a dangerous situation if you tend to hold on to the urge to urinate. Initially you might face occasional discomforts but in the long run, it can be life threatening. Difficulties include pain in your bladder, discomfort while passing urine, bending of your body and/ or lower abdominal distress. Suppression can also lead to the formation of stones.
7. Defecate
This is what you also describe as the “call of nature” and suppression to which causes pain in your calves, headache, indigestion and/ or constipation. It may even lead to vomiting, excessive wind formation and/ or involuntary defecation. You might be a little busy to ignore the urge but do not risk your health because of an engaging schedule.
8. Hunger
One should just not try and starve the body but eat, and eat healthy. Understand the difference between genuine and false hunger pangs. When the body demands for food do not control and suppress the natural urges. It can be harmful to your health along with overall fitness. Your body can be at risk of suffering from body aches, anorexia, a decline in the brainpower along with giddiness and depression.
9. Burp
It’s another self-restricting situation to freely belch and feel content. Controlling your burps might be a regular habit to keep up with that social status. But did you know, suppression of your burps may cause chest pain and excessive production of flatus? It’s a harmless practice but unknowingly you also might be avoiding it.
10. Expel Wind
This might seem to be an embarrassing practice but suppressing the urge to expel wind causes several health adversities. You face regular discomforts including pain in your abdomen, urinary retention, improper evacuation of the body waste, exhaustion and chronic indigestion. In the long run and under extreme conditions one can even suffer from an abdominal tumour.
11. Vomit
At times it might seem really normal to hold back the urge to vomit. But do you know suppression of the urge to vomit causes diseases like anorexia, pigmentation of the face, anemia, nausea and/ or fever.
12. Breath Faster
While exercising you shouldn’t feel to suppress the urge of breathing faster. It helps you avoid fainting, sudden loss of senses or any other heart-related diseases. Even if it’s a brisk walk session do not forget to inhale and exhale!
13. Drink Water
Controlling your thirst is in no way a good idea! But if you suppress the urge to drink water and it’s something you habitually do, the practice would definitely make your system dry. It exhausts your body’s working and you encounter problems like fainting and vertigo.
