Did you know that women experience higher rates of PTSD than men? Because they’re more often victims of rape, sexual abuse as well as domestic violence. Eating disorders and body image issues are also much more prevalent among women. Moreover pregnancy, menopause, and menstruation often create depression and anxiety as a side effect. We know how hard it all can be and that’s why, we’ve put together this list of 10 Ayurvedic tips to help maintain women’s mental health.
10 Tips To Improve & Maintain Women’s Mental Health
1. Balance Your Dosha.
When aggravated, each of the three doshas in Ayurveda creates its own set of mental problems.
- Vatas become anxious, hyper-sensitive, obsessive, and impulsive.
- Pittas get aggressive, insecure, controlling, egoistic, and frustrated.
- Kaphas become depressed, attached, greedy, unmotivated, and dull.
By balancing your dosha, you can prevent or better manage the related mental imbalances.
2. Do Yoga Regularly.
Yoga is a must-try. It has proved to be highly effective in helping manage mental illness in women as well as men. There are useful poses for anxiety as well as depression in women that can be practiced daily, just for 20 minutes. So go ahead and learn it from a well-trained teacher.
3. Learn The Art Of Meditation.
Meditation literally rewires the brain. It can help establish a balanced emotional state. It brings peace and stillness. Meditation also helps cope with trauma and improves the body’s response to stress. There are plenty of types to choose from!
4. Maintain Positive Relationships.
Among the common causes of mental illness in women is trauma from violence and abuse – often by close ones. We encourage you to step away from ANYONE who brings negativity into your life. Surround yourself with people who lift you up.
5. Prioritise Time With Yourself.
Most mothers, especially working mothers, don’t make enough time for themselves. This can be harmful for women’s mental health. Go on walks. Take hot baths. Write in your journal…enjoy some time alone. It’s immensely beneficial.
6. Eat Clean, Fresh, And Natural Foods.
Ayurveda has long known about the gut-brain connection. That’s why, a satvik diet is encouraged – fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, organic milk products, honey, and digestive spices. This promotes emotional wellness. Avoid processed food, refined sugar, stale food, excessively pungent food, and meat.
7. Balance Your Hormones.
Hormonal imbalance often causes or aggravates anxiety and depression in women. Avoid birth control. Eat clean. Detoxify your body. Don’t smoke. Exercise often. Sleep well. And visit your gynec regularly to check for hormonal conditions.
8. Work Out – According To Your Dosha.
Common mental illnesses like anxiety in women can be significantly improved by exercise. Ayurveda recommends fast forms of exercise for Kapha. Vatas should have a moderately slow and grounding routine. Pittas should do non-competitive and cooling work outs. Here’s more on exercises for each dosha.
9. Get Abhyanga Massages.
Many issues like insomnia, anxiety as well as depression in women can be soothed with Ayurvedic massage. And you can do yourself. It has a deeply relaxing, rejuvenating, and re-energising effect on the mind. It removes toxins as well as promotes well-being.
10. Don’t Neglect Sleep.
The long term effects of insufficient or unrestful sleep on the mind are highly damaging. Sleep around 10 pm every night and wake up with the Sun. This helps you get deeply relaxing sleep, and it also promotes a healthy sleep-wake cycle. Here are some more tips for sleeping better.
