A baby’s cry can be the most hurtful sound in the world, especially when the causes remain unidentified. Colic is one major reason. What is colic in babies? It is basically gas that arises due to no definite cause. How long does colic last? It lasts for about a few weeks if unaddressed. With effective treatment of the colic symptoms, it can go away within days.
What Is Colic In Babies?
Colic is actually gas that causes severe pain in a baby’s abdomen. When he/she cries for hours without a trigger, colic symptoms can be observed. Home remedies can be a definite cure – but medical supervision is necessary.

- Weak immunity
- A developing nervous system
- Poor diet
- Unhygienic habits
- Improper lifestyle of the mother
What Are The Colic Symptoms?
- Intense crying in a noticeable pattern (Rule of 3: Crying for 3 hours a day, 3 days a week and for 3 weeks)

- Recoiling to touch
- Changing postures
How To Treat Colic Symptoms?
1. Change The Milk Bottle.
Try changing the bottle from which the child is being fed as it can make a huge difference. If the mother is breastfeeding, then use the other nipple. Mothers are also advised to keep their diet under check as the milk could be the cause of the trouble.
2. Try Warm Baths.
What is colic in babies? It simply is a gas problem since the digestive system of a baby is weak and lacks the digestive fire. Therefore, warm baths or compresses can be beneficial in treating the colic symptoms. Also, bathing with the infant can help create a bond as well as a sense of belonging.
3. Go For A Tummy Massage.
It’s always a great idea to massage the infant’s body – especially the stomach area. It will not only relax the baby but also effectively help release gas. Please note, massaging the baby can at times be a little tricky, hence be careful.
4. Rock The Baby For Burps.
A baby usually passes gas from around 16 to 20 times in a day. However, difficulty is burping can result in severe colic symptoms. Therefore, gently rock the baby and pat his/her back to release burps as well as gas from the stomach.
5. Calm The Baby With Soothing Sounds.
Babies tend to sleep better in the presence of soothing as well as buzzing sounds. So, turn on an appliance like a hair dryer or vacuum machine that isn’t too loud and relieving to the ears. When they sleep better, they feel better.
