Smoking…a serious health hazard. A grave matter of concern for the smoker, to those around, and to the environment. The World Health Organisation brings to light the serious health effects of smoking. It says that smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable and premature death globally.
Smokers conveniently ignore the warning signs about the health effects of smoking and allow their bodies to get consumed by this deadly habit. The health effects of smoking can be from the tip of the head to the toes…every organ and system of our body. Though there are many long term effects of smoking which a smoker fails to recognise, there are some immediate effects of smoking which if heeded to at the right time can save a smoker from physical, emotional, and damage. Let’s look at some of them.

1. It Harms Your Face.
Smoking literally steals your beauty! The skin starts drying up, looking dull, grayish, and loses elasticity. Because of reduced blood circulation and increased stress, wrinkles appear earlier than usual around mouth and eyes – making a smoker look much older. So even if you follow a skin-friendly diet, smoking will ensure that you don’t look your best.
2. It Can Cause Blindness.
Nicotine restricts chemicals which help in night vision and causes physical changes in the eyes that can badly affect our eyesight. Smoking also increases the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration, which leads to blindness.
3. Effects On The Ears
Not many people know about the health effects of smoking on the ears .Smoking reduces oxygen supply to the cochlea, a snail-shaped organ in the inner ear. This results in permanent damage to the cochlea and mild to moderate hearing loss.
4. Serious Smoking Effects On Lungs
Smoking builds up scar tissue leading to physical changes in the lungs and airways that cause difficulty in breathing and chronic cough with mucous. Ephysema, a fatal disease is one of the smoking effects on lungs. It also puts asthma patients at danger. Inflammation, scarring, and respiratory infections too are among the serious smoking effects on lungs. And let’s not forget lung cancer.
5. It Spoils Your Oral Health.
Smoking causes mouth sores, ulcers, gum diseases, cavities, and other oral health problems. It can cause cancers of the mouth and throat in the long run. And it makes the mouth stink. So, please stop before it’s too late!
6. Havoc In Your Heart
There are very harmful effects of smoking on cardiovascular health. It can cause blockages and narrowing in your arteries, which means less blood and oxygen flow to your heart. It also causes as well as worsens high blood pressure. Smoking increases your chances of having a stroke and dying young.
7. It Damages Your Brain.
When brain cells are deprived of oxygen due to the narrowing of arteries caused by smoking, there is a risk of stroke trigger. And stroke, as we know, causes paralysis, slurred speech, altered brain function and finally death. Smoking also contributes to declining mental health since it increases stress levels, making one more susceptible to mental disorders like anxiety and insomnia.
