The heart, or ‘hrudaya’ as known in Ayurveda, controls the flow of prana (life force energy) in the body. As we know, the heart is where all main blood vessels originate. Apart from its biological importance and position, it is also the hub or source of our emotions. This is also where the consciousness or soul lives. Almost everything that happens within us has to do with the condition of our heart. Ayurveda has many heart health tips that can help us live a heart healthy life. These days, it is very often that we hear about deaths due to a heart attack even among the young, and cardiovascular disease, a major life taker. Here are some important heart health tips.
Heart Health Tips For Strength, Longevity & Heart Disease Prevention
1. Exercise Regularly.
We all know we should exercise. But do we? And how often is the question too! Exercises improve the muscles’ ability to draw oxygen from the circulating blood which reduces the need for the heart to work harder to pump more blood to the muscles. No need for a strenuous or rigorous regime. Just do simple yoga, walking, jogging, swimming, dancing….whatever you enjoy. Do it! And regularly!
2. Detoxify Your Body.
To detoxify is to cleanse or eliminate toxins from our body. Unhealthy lifestyles, stress, environmental issues and many such factors prevent our detoxifying organs like kidneys and liver to naturally function smoothly. This puts a lot of stress on the heart, making it pump more vigorously. Fast once in every few months, and include these detox juices in your daily diet. Also, eat satvik and drink plenty of water.
3. Eat A Heart Healthy Diet.
Now that we know about exercising and detoxifying, let us look at what heart healthy diet we should follow, to be free from the fear of a heart attack. And for that we have to know those heart healthy foods. Ayurveda recommends:
- Fresh fruits
- Leafy greens
- Oatmeal
- Nuts like almonds or walnuts
- Olive oil
- Whole grains
- Flaxseeds
- Amla
- Fresh, natural, and organically grown food.
On the other hand, avoid anything stale, processed, alcoholic, and packed with refined sugar.
4. Take Heart-Healing Herbs.
Besides heart healthy foods, there are some heart healthy herbs which can help in heart disease prevention. By now we know that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women the world over. But not many of us are aware that by adding a herbal element to our daily life, we can truly impact the overall health of our heart.
5. Meditate.
Meditation or prayer is excellent for our emotional and physical well-being. Very effective for heart disease prevention. When we meditate or pray, we begin to feel calm, relaxed, become more aware and conscious of our thoughts….all this leads to a lowering of heart rate and blood pressure, better oxygen supply, and decreased stress levels. It therefore play an important role in the treatment or prevention of cardiovascular disease.
6. Don’t smoke.
The nicotine in cigarettes stimulates the body to produce adrenaline. The carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood. All this raises the blood pressure and pressurises the heart to pump harder. Smoking increases the stiffness of blood vessels which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. So, do yourself a favour and quit it!
