If you are in a habit of biting nails, then others must have asked you to stop. Be it in a stressful situation or just otherwise, nail-biting never does any good to your health. It only makes you a host to a number of bacterial infections and other gruesome viruses. So, unless you love sucking millions of germs into your body, you should stop the practice. But, how to stop biting nails? Just give a thought to these 7 reasons and you would yourself put a full stop to it!

How To Stop Biting Nails? Remember These!

1. It Causes Inflammation

Our fingernails are more sensitive and susceptible to damage than we can even think of. Saliva that comes in touch with them has a chemical composition which leaves the fingers inflamed. When inside the body, saliva serves health purposes. But when you constantly bite your nails, the skin around tends to corrode in the same way licking lips make them chapped.

2. Deformity Is Irreversible

What to do to stop biting your nails? Remember that it can lead to deformities! Gnawing damages the formative layer called the matrix, which in turn causes deformities like ingrown nails. The matrix is the base of your nails which consists of swiftly dividing skin cells that fill up with protein keratin. Once you start biting nails, the habit can lead to chronic infections and an impaired matrix.

3. Infections Are Serious

When you knowingly or unintentionally bite a bigger piece of your nail, it is left exposed to bacteria. As a result, pain and swelling show up along with redness and pus-filled lumps. This infection can stay for as little as 2-3 days or go on for weeks together.

4. It Causes Abdomen Sickness

Exposing your gut to the micro-organisms present on the fingers through the way of mouth is an absolutely bad idea. With all kinds of trash stuck under your nails, you even fill your mouth with those germs and endanger your overall well-being. This habit results in infections ranging from common colds to critical stomach disorders.

5. Dental Problems Are Unavoidable

With the habit of nail-biting, the sockets of your teeth gradually become sensitive and crooked. The roots are even receptive to gingivitis in critical conditions. Teeth tend to lose their root support and become deformed.

6. It Can Create Oral Injuries

You might not realize but a prolonged habit of nail biting can even result in oral skin infection or herpes.

How to stop nail biting? Remember that it can even cause lip blisters due to the constant transfer of bacteria into your mouth through the fingers.

7. Bad Breath Is Yet Another Reason

In severe cases, you can also become prone to halitosis (highly repugnant breath). The bacterium already present in mouth doubles when you constantly keep sticking your fingers into it.

In Conclusion …

Nail biting has adverse effects, some of which are even irreversible in the longer run. This is more than just a habit and there are both temporary as well as permanent consequences. So, how to stop biting nails? Try to channelize your efforts and energy into something else that doesn’t let you grind down a part of your body!
